Creative DirectorRhode Island School of Design August 2018
Talent Citizen in partnership with Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) is pleased to announce the completion of a nationwide search, led by Tracy Welsh and her team, for a Creative Director. Talent Citizen welcomes Huy Vu to this inaugural and pivotal role for the institution.
A product of RISD’s graduate program in graphic design, Vu rejoins RISD from Casper, a sleep startup that was poised for rapid growth with its bed in a box offering, where he served as Vice President of Brand Creative. Under his guidance, Vu scaled the creative team from a handful of designers to a full-fledged staff including copy writers and creative operations, to support branding, strategy, and product marketing and design for a company that ultimately transformed the mattress industry.
Prior to Casper, Vu served as the Art Director for Jack Spade, a passion project introduced by Andy Spade to explore new ideas about the intersection of advertising and art. The brand developed a following as Vu helped to translate an ethos of combining art practice with commerce into commercial success manifesting in a fleet of stores and growth of wholesale business.
Vu brings a diversity of experience and appreciation for RISD’s distinctive identity and mission, and steps in as Creative Director at an exciting time in RISD’s history. Led by President Somerson, the college seeks to foster initiatives that further a guiding principle of “design in all things”, such as a grant partnership with the National Science Foundation, focused on examining marine shifts and communicating complex scientific ideas to the public. RISD has additionally renewed commitment to enrolling and supporting a diverse and equitable community via their Social Equity and Inclusion Initiative, launched in Fall of 2017.
Vu earned a Masters of Fine Arts in graphic design from RISD in 2009 and holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Carlton College.
